Water-Use Efficiency Practices in Effect

Otay no longer has restrictions on watering days or minutes per day. It is recommended that irrigation take place before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to reduce water loss due to evaporation. This also applies when watering by hand.

Prohibited Actions

Water conservation is voluntary. However, it is prohibited to use potable water for the following activities:

  • Applying water to outdoor landscapes resulting in more than incidental runoff
  • Washing vehicles without an automatic shutoff nozzle
  • Washing hard surfaces like driveways or sidewalks that don’t absorb water
  • Street cleaning or construction site prep
  • Filling decorative fountains, lakes, or ponds
  • Irrigating turf within 48 hours of one-fourth of an inch (¼”) of rainfall
  • Irrigating turf on public medians

The use of water is not prohibited to the extent use is necessary to address an immediate health and safety need. This may include, but is not limited to, the use of potable water in a fountain or water feature when required to be potable because human contact is expected to occur.
