Enter the 2020 WaterSmart Landscape Contest to Win Various Prizes
Residential customers of the Otay Water District are invited to showcase their water-saving gardens in the 2020 WaterSmart Landscape Contest. The District is now accepting applications and nominations for this competition that will award a $250 nursery gift card, among other prizes, to the winner for “Best in District.” The deadline to enter is Monday, April 27, 2020.
Every year, participating water agencies in San Diego County reward residents who have created beautiful landscapes with water-wise features and practices. Last year, the District selected Bob and Shan Cissell from La Mesa as “Best in District.” They demonstrated the importance of outdoor water-use efficiency as a means of helping to meet the future water needs of the region including the District’s service area.
After participating in the WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Program and drawing inspiration from the Water Conservation Garden, the Cissells turned their 2,500 square feet of irrigated grass into a conservation garden, decreasing their water use by an average of roughly 33 percent.
This year, nominations are also welcomed. Along with the application, applicants or nominators are required to submit before and after photos of the landscape, a plant list, and short story about the landscape’s transformation. Entrees will be judged based on overall attractiveness, appropriate plant selection, design, maintenance, and irrigation methods.
In addition to the nursery gift card of their choice, the winner will receive a goody bag, a certificate of recognition, and a feature in the District’s newsletter, website, social media, and other promotional materials.
