Showcase Your Yard Makeover in Otay’s WaterSmart Landscape Contest
Are you proud of your water-saving landscape? Share it with others by entering the 2021 WaterSmart Landscape Contest. The deadline to enter is Friday, May 14, 2021.
Once again, the Otay Water District has joined water agencies throughout San Diego County to launch the annual contest. Each participating agency awards a resident with the title of “Best in District” and a $250 nursery gift card.
Entries are judged based on design, overall attractiveness, efficient irrigation methods, and appropriate plant selection and maintenance. Front, back, and side yards are welcome.
Additional prizes for Otay winners include a goodie bag, certificate of recognition, and a feature in the District’s newsletter, website, social media, and other promotional materials.
To qualify, applicants must submit before and after photos of their landscape, a plant list, and a short description of their landscape’s transformation. Nominations are also welcome.
Last year, the District awarded Patricia Wood from El Cajon for transforming 3,850 square feet of landscape. Wood had integrated water-saving features and wheelchair accessibility in her front and side yards. As a result, her estimated overall water use decreased by an average of 27 percent.
